What is suction dredging, in one paragraph?
A floating pump with a rotating cutter head loosens the sediment on the bottom and pulls it through a sealed pipeline to the bank, where geotextile fabric tubes catch the solids and let the water filter back out clear. No bucket swings through the water, no truck crosses the lawn, and the lake bottom comes up through a hose instead of over your seawall.
When should I book to get dredged during the winter drawdown?
By Labor Day. Alabama Power starts easing Lake Martin toward winter pool in the fall, the permit process takes two to six weeks, and the drawdown calendar fills first because low water makes every job simpler. Spring and summer work happens too, it just books with less competition.
How do you price a job before seeing the bottom?
We do not. The published cost guide gives you real ranges up front, and the depth check turns your specific slip or pond into an exact written number. The sounding costs $300 to $800 and credits against the job, so the quote is built on measurements rather than a glance from the bank.
Can dredging damage my seawall or make erosion worse?
Done right, the opposite. We dredge to a stable grade and keep a setback from structures so the toe of your seawall stays supported. What actually damages seawalls is the scour pocket that forms when boats operate in water too shallow for them, which is a symptom of needing the dredge.
Is the sediment in my slip toxic or regulated?
Residential lake silt around here is almost always clean red clay and organic muck, fine to spread as fill. Testing enters the picture for stormwater basins, marina fuel docks, and old industrial sites, and when a job needs it we sample before quoting the disposal path so the number you get is real.
What if the permit gets denied or kicked back?
It happens rarely, usually over drawings or a neighbor objection, and the fix is a revision rather than a dead end. If a permit cannot be obtained for the scope you asked for, you owe the survey fee and the filing costs, not the price of a dredge that never floated. We have not left a residential slip unpermitted yet.
Do you rent equipment or do the work yourselves?
We show up with the crew and the rig, run the job under our own permits and insurance, and hand you closeout soundings when we leave. If your project is small enough that a rental dredge and a free weekend genuinely make more sense, we will say so on the phone and save everyone the visit.
How disruptive is the work to the neighbors?
The dredge sounds like a bass boat idling, the work area stays inside a turbidity curtain, and the tubes sit where you and we agree they go. The polite move on a shared cove is telling neighbors the dates, and the smart move is asking them if they want their slips done while the mobilization is paid for.
